The
Silver Spurs Pickup Men play an important role during the rodeo,
removing the livestock from the arena as well as getting riders
safely off the bucking horse. Pickup Men not only have to be skilled
horsemen and ropers, they must also have nerves of steel as they
ride alongside high-kicking broncs with flying hooves and gnashing
teeth.
Bareback
and Saddle Bronc riders know that their ride is not over after the
eight seconds have passed and the horn sounds... they still have
to exit the horse safely! If the bronc rider becomes entangled in
the rigging, it's the job of the Pickup Men to quickly free him
from his wildly bucking mount. Once the Pickup Men have rescued
the bronc rider and gotten him to safely to the ground, they must
remove the flankstrap from the horse and escort it out of the arena.
The
Pickup Men are involved in every rodeo event with the exception
of Barrel Racing, and while their job may appear fairly straightforward,
it requires a vast amount of rodeo knowledge and years of livestock
experience.
